An episode is a content update milestone that determines which maps, quests, monsters, and gameplay systems are available on the server. Each episode expanded the world and introduced new mechanics since the game's launch in 2002 by Gravity Co.

Pre-Renewal covers Episodes 1 through 12 (through approximately 2007–2008) with a level cap of 99 and classic damage formulas. The Renewal patch in 2009 reworked combat mechanics, raised the level cap, and introduced 3rd Job classes.

Pre-Renewal episodes — particularly Episodes 10 through 12 — remain consistently popular for their classic feel and balanced economy. Renewal-era episodes are chosen by players who prefer 3rd and 4th Job content with higher level caps.

The episode controls which Job classes are unlocked, which maps and dungeons are accessible, and which systems such as War of Emperium or Battlegrounds are active. A Pre-Renewal server will have a different class roster and skill balance than a Renewal server.

Use the episode filter in the catalog to narrow the list to servers running a specific content version. Each server card displays its episode or era so you can compare options before choosing.
